Ashley became interested in jewellery because of his mother: “She does wear a lot of jewellery.”

So it’s entirely fitting that his favourite piece is a silver cross with pavé diamonds that he made for her last Christmas. Inspired by the challenge to make sure that all the diamonds were sitting at precisely the same height and angle, Ashley created a piece of accomplished jewellery far beyond his years – and his mum was delighted. “She was over the moon. She doesn't take it off.”

When Ashley left school at 16, his mother was his main supporter, helping him seek out a way into the industry. Eventually, he found his way towards an apprenticeship with a jeweller in Hatton Garden.
