What to Engrave on a Ring

Every wedding ring is as unique as the couple who share it, but for many the addition of an engraving helps to make an already unique ring a truly personal symbol of love. Available for both engagement and wedding rings, inscriptions are a popular and meaningful way of customising your jewellery.

Ring Engraving

Most commonly placed on the inside of a ring to create the sense of a “secret message” that the couple themselves might only ever see, engravings are an excellent opportunity for couples to give a bit more character to their jewellery. Shared jokes, meaningful albeit funny lines or secret pet names are all popular choices to be placed on this hidden part of the ring that need not adhere to tradition. Selecting a favoured font also helps make messages that much more personal, though it should be noted that overly decorative or ornate fonts may prove illegible within the confines of a ring.

It is possible for engravings to be placed on the outside of the ring if this is your preference. Foreign scripts such as Chinese and Arabic can look particularly pleasing on outer surface engravings, although research into accurate translations is recommended if you are not familiar with your selected language.

Wedding Ring Engraving Ideas

Wedding ring inscriptions come in twos, and engraved messages will usually be connected to one another, such as the groom’s message being a continuation of the bride’s. A nickname for the bride might also be worn by the groom, allowing for both partners to always carry a piece of their loved one with them. Popular ideas include:

  • The date of the wedding
  • The date of the relationship’s start
  • “I do”
  • Partner’s name or initials
  • Famous quotes (split across both rings)
  • Single word synonyms such as “Always”/ “Forever”
  • Nicknames
  • Lyrics or poetry
  • Psalms
  • Humour e.g. “Put me back on!”

Engagement Ring Engraving Ideas

Engagement rings are also commonly engraved with a personal message. Arguably providing a little more freedom than wedding rings which usually feature two messages that work in tandem, engagement ring inscriptions are stand-alone messages that mark the precious memory of proposal. These engravings also give the proposing partner the opportunity to add a surprise message for their beloved. Popular messages include:

  • The date of the proposal
  • The date of the relationship’s anniversary
  • Initials of the bride and groom
  • A personal ‘hidden’ message from the proposing partner
  • Humorous statements e.g. “She said yes!”
