Diamond gift guide

Diamonds are the perfect gift for any occasion . If you’re looking for inspiration for a Christmas or anniversary present, Vashi.com has some tips to make your choice easier.

Before you select a gorgeous jewellery item to give to a very lucky person, you may want to consider:

1. Taste

What do you know about the recipient’s jewellery preferences? Does she like to wear diamond jewellery on special occasions or has she spoken admiringly about a diamond ring you were wearing? Does she like Art Deco jewellery or prefer modern, designer jewellery items?

2. Lifestyle

Does she enjoy sports, pottery, playing the piano or any other activities that may interfere with her wearing diamond rings? Perhaps she is not allowed to wear diamond jewellery at work, due to a corporate clothing policy. Many companies don’t allow ostentatious jewellery items, but would be happy to allow staff to wear elegant, understated diamond stud earrings.

3. Style

Does she normally wear colourful, fashionable items or classic, elegant jewellery? Does she have a passion for vintage rings and necklaces or does she spend hours browsing market stalls for ethnic pieces? It is best to look at jewellery she wears on a daily or regular basis, rather than quirky items that hardly ever leave her drawer.

4. Stones

Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but there are many other beautiful gemstones that look stunning as the centrepiece on a jewellery item. Emeralds, rubies and sapphires are all popular choices for rings, earrings and pendants. Combined with smaller diamonds they can create a spectacular look for your gift of choice.

5. Metals

Should you go for platinum, white gold, yellow gold or silver jewellery? Your choice will no doubt be influenced not just by the price difference, but by the personal preferences of the recipient. Platinum is a popular, strong but more expensive metal, whereas silver is cheaper but softer – and therefore more prone to scratches.

6. Type

Depending on the occasion for which you are trying to find a present, a diamond ring may not be an obvious choice for your gift. For wedding anniversaries or birthday presents stud earrings, diamond pendants, bracelets and bangles may also be considered.

7. Value

You will undoubtedly have at least a rough idea of how much you plan to spend on your diamond gift. It is perhaps also worth thinking of whether the recipient would feel comfortable wearing expensive jewellery and whether a normal insurance policy would cover the item.

8. Presentation

How do you plan to present your gift? Does it come in a beautiful jewellery box or do you need to buy one separately? If you cannot deliver the jewellery in person, does the jeweller provide a gift wrap service – possibly with the option to add a personal message?

9. Returns policy

Buying diamond jewellery for others always remains a personal choice. If the gift you have purchased is really not to the recipient’s taste – for whatever reason – is the jeweller prepared to swap it for a jewellery item of her choice or give you a full, no questions asked refund?

10. Warranties

There is nothing worse than to buy a diamond gift and find out that it has a manufacturing defect. Before you purchase, check whether the jewellers gives you a free, lifetime warranty on manufacturing defects.
