Cushion Cut Diamonds
The Cushion cut, sometimes referred to as the Old Mine cut or Pillow cut, is a square style diamond cut with rounded corners. Unlike the Emerald or Asscher cuts which feature cropped corners, those of the Cushion cut are fully rounded whilst still maintaining a square shape, much like the furnishings from which it takes its name.
What is a Cushion Cut Diamond?
First conceived over 200 years ago, the Cushion cut is an historical cut, with an elegant design that reflects its history. Originally created to best reflect light as provided by candles, it was one of the most popular cuts for a century. Featuring 58 facets, often larger and more open than other cuts, the light reflection of a Cushion diamond will be ‘chunkier’ than modern diamonds which tend to feather the light, providing a unique, subdued sparkle. Famous uses of the cushion cut include the Cullinan II and the Hope Diamond. In modern times celebrity rings such as Kim Kardashian’s have helped raise the profile of this cut as the ideal choice for vintage-style engagement rings.
The sparkle of the Cushion cut may not be able to rival the round brilliant in terms of intensity, but for an understated, timeless sophistication and romance, Cushion cuts are a unique choice that stand out from the crowd.
A Modern Twist
There does exist a modern version of the Cushion cut designed to help improve their brilliance, though the differences between the two are often indistinguishable. When searching for your ideal engagement ring, the term “Classic Cushion” and “Modified Cushion” may be used interchangeably. Modern diamonds may give more of a “crushed ice” effect, though this is not a hard rule for all modern interpretations of this style. As the Cushion cut can be executed in several different ways, including some variation in length/width ratio, every cushion cut may appear a little different and, titles aside, it should be your personal preference which dictates which is ‘the one’ for you.
Selecting your Diamond
For the best Cushion cut, it is recommended that a diamond with a minimum colour of H, clarity of VS2, and very good cut is selected.
More modest budgets can still enjoy this classic cut with diamonds featuring a minimum colour of I, clarity of SI1, and very good cut.
